About:
For my final senior project, I have made a cooking visual novel inspired by the hit anime
series Mob Psycho 100. The series revolves around the life of a middle school psychic,
Kageyama Shigeo (also known as Mob). Mob had difficulties accepting and controlling
his psychic powers after a spike of his emotions led him to unconsciously hurt his
brother and others around him. Therefore Mob seeks guidance in self-proclaimed
psychic, Reigen Arataka. Initially Reigen takes advantage of Mob solely for his powers
and greatly underpays him with an hourly wage of ¥ 300 per hour, but later on in the
series, he comes to have character development and greatly appreciates the boy’s
presence in his life. MP100 follows the journey of these two tackling various exorcism
requests, Mob learning how to reintegrate himself into a middle school social circle,
beating a psychic terrorist organization, and eventually Reigen coming clean about his
identity to Mob and likewise Mob accepting his powers as part of him in the final
season. It is a shonen story about self-acceptance and acknowledging that having
psychic powers does not make oneself “special” and better than others, that regardless
it’s just another characteristic that makes us human at the end of the day. Despite these
action-packed and male-oriented genres, it is a comedic anime and that is something I
hope to “critique” rather with my visual novel. The project is called “Mob Psycho 100
“Ramen Rush” Visual Novel”, a game that leads Mob (the player) to make ramen for
Reigen’s birthday. As you navigate through the game with the help of main character
Dimple, an evil spirit, you can come to 6 possible endings of how this cooking adventure
will go. I will be incorporating a more serious take within the dialogue, critiquing the
show through the use of comedic script, from calling out Reigen’s illegal pay to the
underestimation of psychics (and how lethal their powers can be). Play “Ramen Rush” to see Mob Psycho 100 in a fun and critical lens you may have never acknowledged
before!
The game has 6 different possible endings with multiple routes to get there. Each ending is linked to a certain emotion (pertaining to the situation) beginning with "100%". As the series is named Mob Psycho 100, the hundred is based on the compilation of emotions within Mob that get him to act out with his psychic powers, each stemming from a 100% of that feeling, so I thought it would be a creative input for the game. The various endings are:
100% shame
100% dissatisfaction
100% pride
100% disaster
100% existential crisis (solved)
100% dimple
